The phrase "Midnight Mass" conjures a specific image: candlelit pews, Silent Night at the stroke of twelve, welcoming Christmas at its first moment.
But when did you last attend a Mass that actually started at midnight?
We analyzed 7,005 Christmas Eve Masses from nearly 5,000 parishes across America. What we found: the tradition isn't dead - it's just moved earlier.
In our sample of nearly 5,000 parishes that publicly publish schedules, we found just 3 offering true midnight Mass (starting at 12:00 AM). The actual number nationwide is likely slightly higher among parishes that don't publish schedules - but still vanishingly rare.
Some regions are keeping the late-night tradition alive more than others.

States keeping the late-night tradition:
The Rust Belt and parts of the South are holding on. These are also regions with older Catholic populations and more deeply rooted parish cultures - factors that tend to preserve late-night traditions.
Meanwhile, in Iowa and Maine, over half of all Christmas Eve Masses start at 4pm. The Midwest has fully embraced the family vigil.

The tradition isn't gone. It just starts two hours earlier now.
10pm now accounts for 10.3% of all Christmas Eve Masses (723 Masses nationwide). It's the fourth most popular time slot.
For many parishes, this IS Midnight Mass in everything but name:
