The Archdiocese of Boston was erected in 1808 as one of the first four dioceses in the United States, and elevated to an archdiocese in 1875. It covers four counties in eastern Massachusetts β Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, and Suffolk β with 327 parishes. The mother church is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston, the largest Catholic cathedral in New England, and the archdiocese is also home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Mission Hill.
