The Archdiocese of Chicago was established as a diocese in 1843 and elevated to an archdiocese in 1880, making it the metropolitan see for the Province of Chicago. It covers Cook and Lake counties in northeastern Illinois and is home to 324 parishes. Holy Name Cathedral on the Near North Side serves as the archdiocesan seat, and the National Shrine of St. Jude β one of the most visited Catholic shrines in the country β is located here as well.
