The Archdiocese of Denver was erected as a diocese in 1887 and elevated to a metropolitan see on November 15, 1941. It spans 24 counties across northern Colorado and is home to approximately 157 parishes. The mother church is the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, a French Gothic landmark consecrated in 1912 and elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1979. The archdiocese also includes the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden, one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the American West.
