The Archdiocese of Newark was established in 1853 as a diocese covering all of New Jersey, and elevated to an archdiocese in 1937. Today it serves northern New Jersey — Essex, Bergen, Hudson, and Union counties — through 225 parishes. Its seat, the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, was completed in 1954 and designated a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II during his 1995 visit.
