Erected as the Archdiocese of Oregon City on July 24, 1846 — the first Catholic archdiocese established west of the Rocky Mountains — the see was renamed Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon in 1928. It covers the Oregon counties west of Wasco, Crook, and Klamath, stretching from the Cascades to the Pacific coast, and is home to approximately 156 parishes. Its mother church, Saint Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, was dedicated in 1885.
