Established as a diocese in 1853 and elevated to an archdiocese in 1875, the Archdiocese of Santa Fe spans the northern and central portions of New Mexico, serving 211 parishes. Its mother church, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in downtown Santa Fe, was elevated to a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. The archdiocese is also home to El Santuario de Chimayo, widely regarded as the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in the United States.
