The Archdiocese of Seattle traces its origins to the Diocese of Nesqually, erected in 1850; the see was moved to Seattle in 1907 and the diocese elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese in 1951. It covers western Washington β 23 counties from the Canadian border to Oregon β and serves around 170 parishes. St. James Cathedral, dedicated in 1907, is the seat of the archdiocese. Catholic missionary presence in the region dates to 1838, when Fathers Blanchet and Demers arrived at Fort Vancouver.
