Archdiocese of Washington (District of Columbia)

The Archdiocese of Washington was established in 1947, covering the District of Columbia and five Maryland counties — Montgomery, Prince George's, Charles, St. Mary's, and Calvert. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle in downtown DC, and the archdiocese is home to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic church in North America. Across its roughly 167 parishes, the archdiocese has welcomed three popes — John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis.
