The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown was established in 1901 as the Diocese of Altoona, covering eight counties in central Pennsylvania β Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Clinton, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset β before taking its current name in 1957. Its 99 parishes are anchored by the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona, dedicated in 1931. The diocese also includes the Prince Gallitzin Chapel House and Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine in Loretto, founded by convert Russian prince Demetrius Gallitzin, one of the earliest missionary priests in the Allegheny Mountains.
