The Diocese of Charleston was established in 1820 by Pope Pius VII, making it one of the oldest Catholic dioceses in the United States. It covers the entire state of South Carolina and includes 122 parishes. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston, consecrated in 1907, serves as its seat. Its first bishop, John England, founded the first Catholic newspaper in the country and established the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy.
