The Diocese of Des Moines was erected on August 12, 1911, carved from the Diocese of Davenport to serve central and southwestern Iowa. Its seat is St. Ambrose Cathedral, and the diocese is also home to the Minor Basilica of St. John the Apostle. Pope John Paul II visited Des Moines in 1979, drawing one of the largest crowds in Iowa history. Today the diocese includes 83 parishes across its roughly 32,000 square kilometers of Iowa.
