Erected by Pope Pius IX in 1857 as the Diocese of Fort Wayne, it was renamed Fort Wayne-South Bend in 1960 when St. Matthew Cathedral in South Bend became a co-cathedral alongside the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The diocese covers 14 counties across northern Indiana and is home to the University of Notre Dame, founded in 1842 by the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The diocese includes 86 parishes.
