The Diocese of Grand Rapids was erected in 1882 from the Diocese of Detroit, covering 11 counties in western Michigan including Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa. Three dioceses have since been carved from its original territory — Saginaw in 1938 and both Gaylord and Kalamazoo in 1970. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Grand Rapids. The diocese now includes around 96 parishes.
