Established in 1970, the Diocese of Kalamazoo covers nine counties across southwest Michigan — Allegan, Barry, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, and Branch — an area where Catholic missionaries were active as early as 1690 near present-day St. Joseph on Lake Michigan.
