The Diocese of Kansas City-Saint Joseph was formed in 1956 when Pope Pius XII merged the Diocese of Kansas City (established 1880) and the Diocese of Saint Joseph (established 1868) into a single see. It spans 27 counties across northwestern Missouri and is home to 91 parishes. The seat is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City, whose gold-leaf dome β added in 1960 β has been a city landmark since the cathedral was built on the highest point in Kansas City.
