Established by Pope Pius XII on October 21, 1944, the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana was carved from the Diocese of Fort Wayne and spans 25 counties across north-central and east-central Indiana — nearly 10,000 square miles of largely rural terrain. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Lafayette. Today the diocese counts about 61 parishes serving a Catholic population that has grown from 36,000 at founding to over 110,000.
