The Diocese of Portland, established on July 29, 1853, covers the entire state of Maine — originally it also included New Hampshire until 1884. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. Bishop James Augustine Healy, who led the diocese from 1875 to 1900, was the first African-American Catholic bishop in the United States.
