The Diocese of Saint Cloud was erected in 1889 by Pope Leo XIII, covering 16 counties across central Minnesota — roughly 12,250 square miles from Stearns County north through the lakes region. Its cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint Mary in Saint Cloud, was designated as such in 1937 after the former Holy Angels Cathedral was damaged by fire. The diocese serves around 137 parishes.
