The Diocese of Salina was established in 1944, succeeding the Diocese of Concordia, which grew out of the Volga German and other immigrant Catholic communities that homesteaded central Kansas in the late 1800s. Covering roughly 27,000 square miles of rural plains, it serves 86 parishes across the region. The Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria — built by those same immigrant settlers and known as the Cathedral of the Plains — sits within the diocese, with Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina as the bishop's seat.
