Erected on July 19, 1850 from territories of the Dioceses of Charleston and Mobile, the Diocese of Savannah covers the southern half of Georgia β about 95,900 square kilometers β and includes 81 parishes. Its cathedral is the Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist in Savannah. The diocese briefly carried the name Savannah-Atlanta from 1937 until 1956, when Atlanta was established as a separate diocese.
