Erected by Pope John XXIII on January 13, 1962, the Diocese of Stockton was carved from territory belonging to both the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of Sacramento. It spans six counties across California's Central Valley and Sierra foothills β San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Alpine, and Mono β with the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Stockton as its mother church.
